Amboseli National Park is, thanks to the Kilimanjaro National Park, one of the most popular wildlife sanctuaries in Kenya. Amboseli National Park is often referred to as “The Home of Elephants’ as some of the largest elephant herds in Africa are found here. The game park also contains vast groups of zebras, wildebeests, giraffes, buffalos, hippos and antelopes, all escaping the chill emanating from the mountain. Also to be found in Amboseli are lions, leopards, cheetahs, rhinos and many other species of wildlife.

Amboseli National Park is situated close to the Kenya-Tanzania border. The park lies at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa (5,896m) whose snow-capped summit presents a splendid view on clear days.

Day 3: Amboseli National Park- Lake Manyara

After breakfast, we drive into Tanzania via the Namanga border. We also pass through Arusha for lunch and then proceed to Lake Manyara National Park. From whichever direction we approach Manyara the view is always stunning. You will enjoy your dinner and overnight stay at Lake Manyara’s splendid Jambo campsite or similar facility.

Lake Manyara is a shallow alkaline lake – which is the normal sate of foam in the Rift Valley wall – and it is at the base of the dramatic western escarpment giving it a beautiful and serene setting.  In addition to its peaceful setting, Lake Manyara’s main attractions are its rich bird life, tree climbing lions and its hippos, which you can see at a closer range than from many other places.

Lake Manyara also hosts thousands of flamingos at all the times of the year and has diverse vegetation ranging from savannah, to marshes and acacia woodland, enabling a variety of wildlife habitats including butterflies.

Day 4: Lake Manyara – Serengeti National Park

We start the day with a morning game drive at Lake Manyara National Park before proceeding to Serengeti National Park with packed lunch boxes.

Game is viewed as we proceed to Serengeti Seronera campsite or similar, for an overnight stay.

Day 5: Serengeti National Park

The day is spent exploring the vast Serengeti National Park, rich with abundant wildlife. You will also visit the northern part of the park where Seronera provides you with the opportunity to seeing the annual wildebeest migration. You will have your dinner and stay overnight at the Serengeti Seronera campsite or similar facility.

The Serengeti is Africa’s most famous park and Tanzania’s largest, covering 14,736 sq km. The park adjoins the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya making it home to a huge population of African wildlife.

With a wildebeest population of about 2 million and several other hoofed species (which include zebra, Thomson’s gazelle, impala, topi, Grant’s gazelle, kongoni, eland, Kirk’s dik- dik, klipspringer, roan, oryx, oribi, waterbuck, buffalo, giraffe and warthog), the Serengeti is sure to attract a string of predators such as lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, golden jackals and bat eared foxes.

The Elephant herds have relatively large numbers but the few remaining black rhinoceros are restricted to special areas to keep them away from poachers. Serengeti also offers rewarding bird viewing with ostrich and kori bustard being common, varieties of larks, finches, and raptors can be seen, but the most distinctive small bird is the beautiful lilac-breasted roller.

Day 6:  Ngorongoro Crater via Olduvai Gorge

After an early morning breakfast, you drive south to the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater, visiting the historic Olduvai Gorge on the way. Enjoy game viewing on your drive with a picnic lunch in a scenic location. You will have your dinner and an overnight stay at Ngorongoro Simba campsite or similar facility.

The Olduvai Gorge cuts through rock beds layered in time over 3 million. It is here where humanoid bones have been found dating back over 1.75 million years including a direct ancestor to modern man. Fossil footprints (over 3 million years old) have also been found here and are the most ancient footprints yet discovered. There is an excellent museum where you can explore the diggings with a guide. It is also a great place to view birds.

Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater – Arusha

Enjoy a morning crater tour then proceed to Arusha with packed picnic lunches. Dinner and overnight at Impala Hotel or similar facility.

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s biggest whole volcanic caldera at 8,300 sq km and is arguably the most stunning arena. It is frequently described as one of the wonders of the world, not only because of its geological magnificence, but also because it serves as an extraordinary natural sanctuary for some of Africa’s largest populations of large mammals.

In the calving season (late January through mid March) the herds concentrate at the Ndutu and Salei Plains (southern Serengeti, Ngorongoro Conservation Area) attracting the attention of predators like the lion, cheetah, hyena, etc.

The Maasai Mara Game Reserve is arguably Kenya’s most popular game sanctuary. The film ‘Out of Africa’ was made to a great extent in this reserve. Thanks to the immigrating animals from Tanzania virtually every type of wildlife can be seen in the Mara.

A spectacle worth seeing is the annual migration of millions of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle from the Serengeti plains across the Tanzania border and the Mara River to arrive at the Maasai Mara grazing fields from late June. The dramatic crossing of the river and the predators preying on the migrants can be viewed from early July to August.

The reserve abounds with birdlife since dose to about 452 species have been recorded. Hot air balloon safaris are readily available in this park and can be arranged at an extra cost of US$ 585 per person which has to be booked earlier, meaning that it has to be included in the safari package.

Day 4: Maasai Mara – Lake Nakuru

Enjoy a breakfast then depart the lodge as you view game on your drive to Lake Nakuru National Park to arrive in good time for lunch. Afternoon game drives are followed by dinner and overnight stay at Lake Nakuru Guest House.

Lake Nakuru is famous for its flamingos and the over 400 species of birds found here. The lake itself is a soda lake on the floor of the rift valley. The sight of millions of flamingos is quite spectacular where from a distance the lake appears ringed in pink.

The lake has also earned a reputation as an important haven for endangered species- particularly the Rothschild’s giraffe and the black and white rhino. Lions, waterbuck, buffalo and baboons are all residents here.

Day 5: Lake Nakuru – Arusha

Early morning game drives then return to the lodge for breakfast and proceed to Nairobi. Have lunch in Nairobi then board an afternoon shuttle bus to Arusha. On arrival at Arusha we will meet you and drive you to Arusha Crown Hotel or similar for an overnight stay.

Day 6: Arusha – Lake Manyara

Depart Arusha in the morning for Lake Manyara. Afternoon game drive, dinner and overnight at a campsite.

Located beneath the cliffs of the Manyara Escarpment, on the edge of the Rift Valley, Lake Manyara National Park offers varied ecosystems, incredible bird life and breathtaking views.

Lake Manyara’s famous tree-climbing lions are another reason to pay this park a visit. The only kind in the world, they make the ancient mahogany and elegant acacias their home during the rainy season, and are a well-known but rare feature of the northern park. In addition to the lions, the national park is also home to the largest concentration of baboons anywhere in the world which makes for interesting game viewing when watching the interaction of large family groups.

Day 7: Manyara – Serengeti

After breakfast, depart for Serengeti passing through Olduvai Gorge, the site of Leakey’s discovery of fossils of human and animal ancestors dating back to almost two million years. Meals and overnight at Serengeti Seronera Campsite.

Day 8: Serengeti

Full day in Serengeti plains in search for wild game you might have missed on the previous day game drive. Morning and afternoon game drives. Meals and overnight at a campsite.

Serengeti National Park is easily Tanzania’s most famous national park, and it is also the largest, at 14,763 square kms. The Serengeti borders Kenya’s Maasai Mara Game Park.

It is the spectacle of the great migration for which Serengeti is most famous. Over a million wildebeest and about 200,000 zebras flow south from the northern hills to the southern plains for the short rains every October and November, and then swirl west and north after the long rains in April, May and June. So strong is the ancient instinct to move that no drought, gorge or crocodile infested river can hold them back. The wildebeest travel through a variety of parks, reserves and protected areas and through a variety of habitats.

Day 9: Serengeti – Ngorongoro Crater

We view game as we drive southeast up into the magnificent Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Enjoy a full afternoon crater tour followed by dinner and overnight stay at a Simba Campsite by the crater rim.

Day 10: Ngorongoro – Arusha

Breakfast then depart for Arusha arriving by lunch time. Have lunch in Arusha then board an afternoon shuttle bus to Nairobi for dinner and overnight stay at Boulevard Hotel or similar facility.

Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival – Nairobi

Be greeted and assisted at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on arrival before you are transferred to Boulevard Hotel or similar facility for an overnight stay.

Day 2: Nairobi – Samburu

Pick up from your hotel at 0700 hrs then we drive by the majestic Mt. Kenya, through the open savannah of the Samburu Game Reserve. We will camp in the narrow stretch of palms and woodlands by the Ewaso Nyiro River which provides water for the animals and some relief from the equatorial sun.

Day 3: Samburu National Reserve

Full day spent exploring the park. Morning and afternoon game drives are offered – Dinner and overnight stay at a campsite.

The highlights of the Samburu Game Reserve are the spectacular scenic beauty, rivers and forests. It is an area where the local people have a rich and colourful heritage. The reserves have numerous permanent springs and a wealth of wildlife which include leopards, hippos, elephants, lions, reticulated giraffe, Gravy’s zebra and crocodiles in the Ewaso Nyiro River. Over 365 species of birds have been identified in the sanctuaries.

Day 4: Lake Nakuru National Park

We break camp soon after breakfast and proceed to Lake Nakuru National Park, enjoying our lunch en-route. Dinner and overnight at a campsite in Nakuru National Park.

Lake Nakuru is a shallow alkaline lake on the edges of Nakuru town and lies a distance of 160 km from Nairobi. The lake is world famous as home to millions of flamingoes. The number of flamingoes depends on the water level which determines the quantity of algae on which the birds feed. Flamingoes are known to migrate to other Rift Valley lakes whenever the water level is low.

The national park surrounds the lake and was gazetted to protect the colony of flamingoes as well as provide sanctuary for endangered species such as the rhino. There are about 25 white and black rhinos, one of the largest concentrations in the country. Predators are also residents to this park while Rothschild’s giraffe have been transferred into the park for safety.

Day 5: Lake Nakuru – Maasai Mara

Soon after breakfast, we will break camp and travel south through the beautiful savannahs and plains of the Rift Valley and reach our base camp site, where we will enjoy another evening in the bush under the far-reaching African sky. Game is viewed as we proceed to Mara Enchoro or Sidai Camp for dinner and an overnight stay.

Days 6 & 7: Maasai Mara

We will spend the next two days on game drives exploring the Maasai Mara. The open grasslands are home to incredibly rich and varied wildlife and the awesome, annual migration of millions of wildebeest and antelope. Optional balloon safari can be arranged at an extra cost.

The Maasai Mara Game Reserve is arguably Kenya’s most popular game sanctuary. The film ‘Out of Africa’ was made to a great extent in this reserve. Virtually every type of wildlife can be seen at the Mara due to the migration from the Serengeti in Tanzania.

A spectacle that is a must see is the annual migration of millions of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle from the Serengeti plains across the Tanzania border and the Mara River to the Maasai Mara grazing fields from late June. The dramatic crossing of the river and the preying on the migrants by predators can be viewed from early July to August.

Day 8: Maasai Mara – Lake Naivasha

We depart the campsite soon after breakfast and proceed to Lake Naivasha. We visit Hell’s Gate National Park which can be explored on foot or by cycling – bicycles are available for hire at an extra cost. Dinner and an overnight stay at Fish Eagle Camp.

Hell’s Gate National Park is characterised by diverse topography and geological scenery. It has historically been an important home for the rare lammergeyer, but it is now thought that the famous pair of birds may not have nested in the park for several years.

You are encouraged to hike and cycle in the park. This is a rarity in Kenyan national parks, and is only made possible due to the lack of large predators such as lions and cheetahs.

Day 9: Lake Naivasha – Amboseli National Park

We break camp and proceed to Amboseli National Park. Amboseli is a magnificent park at the foot hills of Mt. Kilimanjaro. We will enjoy afternoon game drives followed by dinner and overnight stay at Kibo Safari Camp or similar facility.

This small park (at 392 sq km) is the second most popular park in Kenya after Maasai Mara, due to the spectacular backdrop of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, on the southern boundary.

Amboseli means ‘the place of water’ in Maasai language. The park has an endless supply of water which is filtered through thousands of meters of volcanic rock from Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Animal species seen include elephant, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, impala and leopard. The birdlife seen here includes pelican, bee-eater, kingfisher, African fish eagle and pygmy falcon running away from the ice-cold weather from Mount Kilimanjaro to sun bathing and tanning in the sunny, dry weather of the Amboseli.

Amboseli is one of the most popular parks and offers excellent accommodation facilities. There are five lodges and two campsites inside the park. Kilimanjaro forms a backdrop to this game sanctuary and it is a sight to see and marvel at. The nomadic, richly decorated Maasai who have a strong and deep culture entertain visitors with enchanting dances of ageless Africa.

Day 10: Full Day Amboseli

Full game drive and overnight.

Day 11: Amboseli – Lake Manyara

Early morning game drives then return to the camp for breakfast after which we drive into Tanzania via the Namanga border. We will also pass through Arusha on our way to Lake Manyara National Park, enjoying our lunch en-route. Regardless of the direction we approach Manyara from, the view is always fantastic. We proceed to a campsite for dinner and overnight stay.

Lake Manyara is a shallow, alkaline lake that is part of the Rift Valley wall. The lake is at the base of the dramatic western escarpment giving it a beautiful and serene setting. In addition to this peaceful setting, Lake Manyara’s main attractions are its rich bird life, tree climbing lions and its hippos, which you can see at a closer range than from many other places. Lake Manyara also hosts thousands of flamingos at certain times of the year and has diverse vegetation ranging from savannah, to marshes and acacia woodland, enabling a variety of wildlife habitats including butterflies.

Day 12: Lake Manyara – Serengeti National Park

Morning game drives at Lake Manyara National Park after which we proceed to Serengeti National Park. View the game as we proceed to the campsite for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 13: Serengeti National Park

We will have 2 days exploring the Serengeti National Park where we will have morning and afternoon game drives. Dinner and an overnight stay at a campsite.

Serengeti is Africa’s most famous and Tanzania’s largest park covering 14,736 sq km adjoining the Masai Mara National reserve in Kenya. With a wildebeest population of about 2 million and several other hoofed species (which include zebra, Thomson’s gazelle, impala, topi, Grant’s gazelle, kongoni, eland, Kirk’s dik-dik, klipspringer, roan, oryx, oribi, waterbuck, buffalo, giraffe and warthog), the Serengeti is sure to attract a string of prey such as lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, golden jackals and bat eared foxes.

Elephants are in their very large numbers and the few remaining black rhinoceros are restricted to a special area, keeping them away from the poachers. Serengeti also offers rewarding bird viewing with ostrich and kori bustard being common, a variety of larks, finches, and raptors can be seen but the most distinctive small bird is the lilac-breasted roller.

Day 14: Serengeti – Ngorongoro Crater

We view game as we drive southeast up into the magnificent Ngorongoro Conservation Area. A full afternoon crater tour followed by dinner and overnight stay at a Simba Campsite by the crater rim.

Ngorongoro and other freestanding mountains are volcanic in origin, formed during the fracturing process that created the Rift Valley 15 to 20 million years ago. When it peaked in size 3 million years ago it was a similar height to Mt. Kilimanjaro today.

Day 15: Ngorongoro – Tarangire National Park

Early breakfast then we break camp and proceed to Tarangire National Park. We enjoy game drives, then dinner and an overnight stay at a campsite.

Herds of up to 300 elephants scratch the dry river bed for underground streams, while migratory wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest and eland crowd the shrinking lagoons. It’s the greatest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti ecosystem – a smorgasbord for predators – and the one place in Tanzania where dry-country antelope such as the stately fringe-eared oryx and peculiar long-necked gerenuk are regularly observed.

Day 16 : Arusha – Nairobi

We break camp soon after breakfast and drive to Arusha – lunch then board an afternoon shuttle bus to Nairobi departing at 1400 hrs to arrive at around 1600 hrs – drop off at the airport or be driven to KIA (if the plan is to leave from there) to board your home bound flight.
