Lake Nakuru’s claim to fame is its flamingos and the over 400 species of birds found here. The sight of the millions of flamingos is quite spectacular. From a distance the lake appears ringed in pink.

Lake Nakuru has also earned a reputation as an important haven for endangered species- particularly the Rothschild giraffe and the black and white rhino. Lion, waterbuck, buffalo and baboons are all resident here.

Day 3: Lake Nakuru – Maasai Mara, Kenya

Drive to Maasai Mara via the Great Rift Valley to arrive at Maasai Mara in time for lunch at Keekorok, Serena lodge. You will have a full afternoon game drive till dusk.

You will easily see lion, rhino, hippo, crocodile, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, warthog, hyena, jackal, wild dog, leopard, many kinds of antelope and elephant.

It is in the Mara that perhaps the most spectacular event of the natural world takes place because of the annual migration of millions of wildebeest and zebra crossing the Mara River from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, followed on their heels by the predators of the savanna – lion, cheetah, wild dog, jackal, hyena and vultures.

Day 6: Maasai Mara – Musoma (Lukuba Island), Kenya

Early morning departure to Tanzania via Isebania border Musoma – through Sirari border point. Transfer to Tembo Beach Hotel where you will board your boat to Lukuba Island and have your afternoon spent relaxing, fishing, hiking on the sunset rocks.

  • Hiking to the sunset rocks
  • A boat trip around the Lukuba Island for birders
  • A small swimming pool is also availableLukuba Lodge is situated on Lukuba Island, about 13 kilometers off the shore of Lake Victoria in the Musoma District. The lodge is ideally situated in the eastern part of Lake Victoria and is an easy destination, just seventy five kilometers from the western Serengeti gate at Ndabaka. It can also be incorporated as a stopover when arriving from the Maasai Mara into Tanzania.

Day 7: Lukuba – Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

You will transfer by boat to the shore of Lake Victoria where you will link up with your guide and proceed to Serengeti National park via the Ndabaka Gate. Lunch at Serengeti Serena Lodge then proceed for an evening game drive.

Day 8: Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Departing in the morning, you will drive west while enjoying game viewing through the western corridor of the Serengeti to the central region of Seronera.

The Serengeti National Park is easily Tanzania’s most famous park, and it is also the largest, at 14,763 square kilometers of protected area. The park borders Kenya’s Maasai Mara Game Park.

It is for the Great Migration for which Serengeti is most famous. Over a million wildebeest and about 200,000 zebras flow south from the northern hills to the southern plains for the short rains every October and November, and then swirl west and north after the long rains in April, May and June.

So strong is the ancient instinct to move that no drought, gorge or crocodile infested river can hold them back. The wildebeest travel through a variety of parks, reserves, and protected areas and through a variety of habitat.

Day 9: Serengeti – Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

We view game as we drive southeast up into the magnificent Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Enjoy a full afternoon crater tour followed by dinner and overnight stay at the Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge on the crater rim or similar facility.

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s biggest whole volcanic caldera at 8,300 sq km and is arguably the most stunning arena. It is frequently described as one of the wonders of the world, not only because of its geological magnificence, but also because it serves as an extraordinary natural sanctuary for some of the Africa’s largest populations of large mammals. Ngorongoro and other freestanding mountains are volcanic in origin, formed during the fracturing process that created the Rift valley 15 to 20 million years ago. When it peaked in size 3 million years ago it was a similar height to Mt. Kilimanjaro today.

    Day 10 : Ngorongoro – Zanzibar, Tanzania

Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival – Nairobi, Kenya

Be met, greeted and assisted at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on arrival before you are transferred to Boulevard Hotel or similar facility for overnight stay.

Pick up from your hotel at 0700 driving, driving by the majestic Mt. Kenya, to the open savannah of the Samburu Game Reserve.

We will camp in the narrow stretch of palms and woodlands by the Ewaso Nyiro River which provides water for the animals and some relief from the equatorial sun.

Day 3: Samburu National Reserve, Kenya

Full day spent exploring the Samburu Narional Reserve. Morning and afternoon game drives are offered. Dinner and overnight stay at a campsite.

The highlight of the Samburu Game Reserve is the spectacular scenic beauty, rivers and forests. It is an area where the local people have a rich and coluorful heritage. The reserves have numerous permanent springs and a wealth of wildlife which include leopard, hippo, elephant, lion, giraffe, Gravy’s zebra and crocodiles in the Ewaso Nyiro River.

Over 365 species of birds have been identified in the sanctuaries.

Day 4: Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya

We will break the camp soon after breakfast and proceed to Lake Nakuru National Park.

Game is viewed as we exit the park, enjoying our lunch en-route. Dinner and overnight at a campsite in Nakuru National Park.

Lake Nakuru is a shallow alkaline lake on the edges of Nakuru town . The lake is world famous as home to millions of flamingos. The number of flamingos depends on the water level which determines the quantity of algae on which the birds feed. Flamingoes are known to migrate to other Rift Valley lakes whenever the water level is low.

The national park surrounds the lake and was gazetted to protect the colony of flamingos as well as provide sanctuary for endangered species such as the rhino. There are about 25 white and black rhinos, one of the largest concentrations in the country.

Predators are also residents to this park while Rothschild’s giraffe have been trans-located into the park for safety.

Day 5: Lake Nakuru – Maasai Mara, Kenya

Soon after breakfast, we will break camp and travel south through the beautiful savannahs and plains of the Rift Valley and reach our base camp site where we will enjoy another evening in the bush under the far-reaching African sky.

Game is viewed as we proceed to Mara Enchoro or Sidai Camp for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 7 – 6: Maasai Mara, Kenya

We will spend the next two days on game drives exploring the Masai Mara.

The open grasslands are home to incredibly rich and varied wildlife and the awesome, annual migration of millions of wildebeest and antelope are the highlights of any visit to Africa from July to September.

An optional balloon safari can be arranged at an extra cost.

The Maasai Mara Game Reserve is arguably Kenya’s most popular game sanctuary. The film ‘Out of Africa’ was made to a great extent in this reserve.

Virtually every type of wildlife can be seen in the Mara because of the migration from Serengeti in Tanzania. A spectacle worth seeing is the annual migration of millions of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle from the Serengeti plains, across the Tanzania border and the Mara River, to the Maasai Mara grazing fields from late June. The dramatic crossing of the river of the herds and the predators who prey on them can be viewed from early July to August.

The reserve is abounding with birdlife and nearly 452 species have been recorded.

Day 8: Masai Mara – Lake Naivasha, Kenya

We depart the campsite soon after breakfast and proceed to Lake Naivasha.

We visit Hell’s Gate National Park which can be explored on foot or by cycling- bicycles are available for hire at an extra cost. One is encouraged to hike and cycle in the park. This is a rarity in Kenyan national parks, and is made possible due to the lack of large predators such as lions and cheetahs.

Hell’s Gate National Park is characterised by diverse topography and geological scenery. It has historically been an important home for the rare lammergeyer, but it is now thought that the famous pair of birds may not have nested in the park for several years.

Dinner and overnight stay at Fish Eagle Camp.

Day 9: Lake Naivasha – Amboseli National Park, Tanzania

We will break camp and proceed to Amboseli National Park via Nairobi.

Amboseli is the magnificent park at the foot hills of Mt.Kilimanjaro. This small park (at 392 sq km) is the second most popular park in Kenya after Maasai Mara, mainly due to the spectacular backdrop of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, on the southern boundary.

Amboseli means ‘the place of water’ in Maasai language. The park has an endless supply of water which is filtered through thousands of meters of volcanic rock from Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Animal species seen include elephant, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, impala and leopard. The birdlife seen here includes pelican, bee-eater, kingfisher, African fish eagle and pygmy falcon running away from the ice-cold weather from Mount Kilimanjaro to sun bathing and tanning in the sunny, dry weather of the Amboseli.

Amboseli is one of the most popular parks and offers excellent accommodation facilities. There are five lodges and two campsites inside the park. Kilimanjaro forms the backdrop of this game sanctuary and it is a sight to see and marvel at. The nomadic richly decorated Maasai who are deeply steeped in Maasai culture entertain visitors with enchanting dances of ageless Africa.

We will have afternoon game drives followed by dinner and overnight stay at Kibo Safari Camp or similar facility.

Day 10: Amboseli National Park, Tanzania

Full day game drive and overnight.

Day 11: Amboseli – Lake Manyara, Tanzania

Enjoy an early morning game drive, return to the camp for breakfast, and drive into Tanzania via the Namanga border. We will also pass through Arusha on our way to Lake Manyara National Park, enjoying our lunch en-route. We proceed to a campsite for dinner and overnight stay.

Lake Manyara is a shallow, alkaline lake that is part of the Rift Valley wall; the lake is at the base of the dramatic western escarpment giving it a beautiful and serene setting.

In addition to this peaceful setting, Lake Manyara’s main attractions are its rich bird life, tree climbing lions and its hippos, which you can see at a closer range than from many other places. Lake Manyara also hosts thousands of flamingos at certain times of the year and has diverse vegetation ranging from savannah, to marshes and acacia woodland, enabling a variety of wildlife habitats including butterflies.

Day 12: Lake Manyara – Serengeti National park, Tanzania

Morning game drive in Lake Manyara National Park after which we proceed to Serengeti National Park. Game is viewed as we proceed to the campsite for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 13: Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

We will have 2 days exploring the Serengeti National Park in which we will have morning and afternoon game drives. Dinner and overnight stay at a campsite.

Serengeti is Africa’s most famous, and Tanzania’s, largest park covering 14,736 sq km and adjoins the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. With a wildebeest population of about 2 million and several other hoofed species (which include zebra, Thomson’s gazelle, impala, topi, Grant’s gazelle, kongoni, eland, Kirk’s dik- dik, klipspringer, roan, oryx, oribi, waterbuck, buffalo, giraffe and warthog), the Serengeti is sure to attract a string of prey such as lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, golden jackals and bat eared foxes.

Elephants are in their very large numbers and the few remaining black rhinoceros are restricted to a special area, keeping them away from the poachers.

Serengeti also offers rewarding bird viewing with ostrich and kori bustard being common, a variety of larks, finches, and raptors can be seen but the most distinctive small bird is the lilac-breasted roller.

Day 14: Serengeti – Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

We view game as we drive southeast up into the magnificent Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Enjoy a full afternoon crater tour followed by dinner and overnight stay at a Simba Campsite on the crater rim.

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s biggest whole volcanic caldera at 8,300 sq km and is arguably the most stunning arena.

It is frequently described as one of the wonders of the world, not only because of its geological magnificence, but also because it serves as an extraordinary natural sanctuary for some of Africa’s largest populations of large mammals. Ngorongoro and other freestanding mountains are volcanic in origin, formed during the fracturing process that created the Rift valley 15 to 20 million years ago. When it peaked in size 3 million years ago it was a similar height to Mt. Kilimanjaro today.

Day 15: Ngorongoro – Tarangire National Park, Tanzania

We take an early breakfast then break camp and proceed to Tarangire National Park.

We enjoy a game drive and then have dinner and overnight stay at a campsite.

Herds of up to 300 elephants scratch the dry river bed for underground streams, while migratory wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest and eland crowd the shrinking lagoons. It’s the greatest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti ecosystem – a smorgasbord for predators – and the one place in Tanzania where dry-country antelope such as the stately fringe-eared oryx and peculiar long-necked gerenuk are regularly observed.

Day 16 : Arusha – Nairobi

Break camp soon after breakfast and drive to Arusha – lunch then board an afternoon shuttle bus to Nairobi. Drop off at the airport or be driven to KIA (if the plan is to leave from there) to board your home bound flight.

Ngorongoro and other freestanding mountains are volcanic in origin, formed during the fracturing process that created the Rift valley 15 to 20 million years ago. When it peaked in size 3 million years ago it was a similar height to Mt. Kilimanjaro today.

Day 11 : Ngorongoro – Lake Manyara, Tanzania

Breakfast then exit the park and drive to Lake Manyara National Park. We explore the park famed for tree climbing lions. A picnic lunch is offered.

The Lake Manyara National Park is serene and beautifully packed with as many attractions as bird life, tree-climbing lions, elephants, and hippos that you can see at closer range than from most other places. Lake Manyara is an alkaline lake and at certain times of the year hosts thousands of flamingos and a diversity of other bird life. Although it is one of the small parks, its vegetation is so diverse enabling it to host a variety of wildlife habitats.
