Travelling to Tanzania

By Air

Tanzania’s air hub is Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam (DAR). The airport is served by several Airlines from Europe, Asia and Africa. There is a 10km transfer to Dar es Salaam.

Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) which is located between Arusha and Moshi, also handles international flights, and is the best option for itineraries in Arusha and the northern safari circuit. There is a 48km transfer to Arusha or Moshi.

To fly into or out of Nairobi you can make connections with local airlines to Kilimanjaro or Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar.

Taxis are available at international airports and in main towns. They have no meters and tend to charge standard rates per journey for given distances.

By Road

Road conditions vary a great deal. The best way to enter Tanzania overland is from Kenya. Both short and long distance bus services are available. On the main long-haul routes, there is a choice between luxury and ordinary buses. There are buses available from Nairobi and Mombasa towns and also from the Nairobi International Airport to Tanzania. Advance booking is recommended.

Tanzania Visas

Foreigners seeking to enter Tanzania should be in possession of valid passports or any other travel document.

The passport or any other travel document is to be presented to the Immigration Control Officer at any entry point, such as Border station, Airport or Harbour. The travel documents must be presented along with a valid visa or a resident’s permit or a pass.

Tourists can obtain a visa on arrival in Tanzania.Visa procurement remains the responsibility of the traveller and not that of World Air Travel and Tours. Please visit the Tanzania Embassy in your country for more information. You can also visit the Tanzania Tourism Board for further details.

Health & Vaccination

Visitors should have an International Certificate of Vaccination against Yellow Fever. These must be issued at least 10 days before departure. A Hepatitis A vaccination is recommended Where applicable, a booster for Tetanus-Diphtheria is also recommended. Please check with your local physician for your medical records.

Anti-malaria tablets are recommended to be taken a few days prior to arrival, during your stay and for a period after returning. Malaria is one of the largest health risks to visitors, and locals, and we strongly recommend all guests take the full, prescribed dosage of medication.

Stay bite-free. When it comes to biting insects, the two main culprits are mosquitoes and tsetse flies. Mosquitoes carry the risk of malaria, so in addition to taking malaria tablets, it’s wise to ensure you keep yourself covered when they are most active – once the sun goes down. Please also carry your anti-insects bites to smear especially at night and also make sure you put the mosquito net on before you sleep. All hotel bed must have one.

If you suffer from sensitive digestion you might wish to bring upset stomach medication such as Imodium or Kaopectate. Changes in food, water, etc. can cause minor upsets in some people and most over the counter medications are normally adequate.

It is always best to seek advice on immunisation well in advance, if possible around 6 weeks before departure.

Travel Insurance

Things can happen when you’re travelling that are out of your control, so insurance should be a priority on your pack list. Considering the unpredictable nature, remote destinations and conditions encountered on many of our tours it is required to have emergency medical services and/or evacuation transportation.

It’s best to purchase your travel insurance as far in advance as possible. Pre-existing medical conditions are usually not covered if you buy the insurance more than 14 days after your initial payment, and if you think you may need to cancel for any reasons, you will also need to purchase the insurance within 14 days. So it is just generally “good practice” to make that extra investment in insurance at this stage. We recommend that you get insurance on your flights when you purchase them, and on your safari or vacation when you pay the deposit (quite early before your trip).
