Mount Kilimanjaro

From the gentle rolling hills and plateaus of northern Tanzania rises the snowy peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, the roof of Africa.

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is the highlight of many visitors’ trip to Tanzania. Few mountains can claim its grandeur, with breathtaking views of Amboseli National Park in Kenya, the Rift Valley and the Maasai steppe.

Hiking to the peak of Kilimanjaro, the highest point on the African continent at 5,895 metres, is the adventure of a lifetime. If paced properly, everyone from seasoned trekkers to first time enthusiasts can scale the snowy peak.

The mountain’s ecosystem is as beautiful as it is varied and diverse. On the lowland slopes, much of the mountain is farmland, with coffee, banana, cassava and maize crops grown for subsistence and cash sale. Once inside the park, thick forest covers the lower altitudes and breaks into alpine meadows once the air begins to thin. Near the peak, the landscape is stark and covered with rocks and ice.

 

Great Migration

It is in Tanzania that the famous Great Migration occurs each year. The Great Migration is one of the most spectacular wildlife events in the world where more than one million animals make their seasonal journey to fresh pastures.

This migration of huge herds of wildlife is sight that must be seen to be believed as they move throughout the Serengeti and Maasai Mara. The migration is full of dramatic moments as the wildebeest brave the crocodile-infested waters searching for greener pastures.

 

Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti is easily Tanzania’s most famous national park and the largest, with 14,763 sq kms of protected grassy plains, tinged with twisted shadows of acacia trees. The Serengeti is the quintessential image of a wild and unspoilt Africa.

Large prides of lions laze easily in the long grass, huge herds of elephants feed on acacia bark and call each other across the plains whilst giraffes, gazelles, monkeys and eland – indeed, the whole range of Africa wildlife are presented in awe-inspiring numbers.

 

Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater is a must see for its sheer beauty. Known as “Africa’s Garden of Eden”, the Ngorongoro Crater is a popular Tanzanian safari destination. Within the crater rim, large herds of zebra and wildebeest roam, while lions laze in the sun. It’s here you will find the endangered black rhino grazing on the floor of the crater.

Just outside the crater’s ridge, Maasai herd their cattle and goats over pastures on the highland slopes, living alongside the wildlife as they have done for centuries. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is protected and only indigenous tribes such as the Maasai are allowed to live within its borders.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area covers highlands plains, scrub bush and forest and covers approximately 8,288 sq kms. The wildlife is concentrated and so the game viewing is truly incredible and it can’t be beaten as a safari destination. It was also here, on the dusty floors of Oldupai Gorge, that humankind’s fossils were discovered giving us an insight into the beginning of humanity.

 

The Swahili Coast

Amazing safaris isn’t all that Tanzania has to offer. Along the Swahili coast you will find tropical beaches, coral reefs and warm, crystal-clear waters where you can end your Tanzanian adventure with some well earned relaxation.

Tanzania has 800 km of palm tree lined coastline facing the Indian Ocean, dotted with historical port cities like Dar es Salaam, Tanga, Bagamoyo and Kilwa.

The exotic island archipelagos of Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia are strongholds of traditional Swahili culture with a vibrant art and music scene. With world class scuba diving, snorkelling, pristine beaches and exotic culture the Swahili coast and islands is a truly magical place.
